Formed in 2001 by Laurent Bardainne, Poni Hoax first drew attention in 2006 with its debut self-titled album, produced by Joakim on his label Tigersushi. The record surprised with its electro-rock sounds and quickly asserted fame for the band in France and abroad. The album includes the singles "She's on the Radio" and "Budapest". This song ranked in the "Top 100" of Pitchfork in 2006, became smash hit in clubs allover Europe. "Poni Hoax" will be remixed many times by DJ's worldwide.
The power of that electro sound comes from the four-hand keyboard, played by Arnaud Roulin and Laurent Bardainne. Nicolas Villebrun on guitar, and Vincent Taeger on drums and percussion are providing a more traditional pop-rock rhythmic that makes the songs enchanting and powerful. On vocals, Nicolas Ker bewitches us with his raw and cavernous voice, producing the sublimely heady melodies of Poni Hoax.
Still evolving in this hybrid universe of rock and disco, Poni Hoax released yet another successful album in 2008: Images Of Sigrid. A pinch of Daft Punk electro energy, a few notes of Bowie and Ian Curtis in the voice of Nicolas Ker, and a dash of David Byrne-esque funk … Poni Hoax alchemy works wonders on this explosive new album. From the hypnotic "Paper Bride" to "Faces of water" which so evokes Nick Cave, the album undergoes all the influences of the band. But who is Sigrid? She is a real woman, an actress, a muse. Her shadow remains palpable in all thirteen tracks of the album, providing for a mysteriousness that is altogether divine.
The single "Antibodies" quickly became a radio hit and the controversial music video clip directed by Danakil received an award. It recently appeared in the video game Rock Band 3. From 2008 to 2010, the band played in major cities across the globe (New York, Montreal, London, Oslo, Moscow), including a sold out concert in Paris and the opening for Franz Ferdinand in London.
